A clinical study fromTominaga et al., 2012 (n=30, 8 weeks) found that natural astaxanthin (6 mg orally, combined with topical application) improved skin elasticity, reduced wrinkle depth and age spot size, and enhanced overall skin texture in healthy women.
A clinical study from Tominaga et al., 2012 (n=36, 6 weeks) found that natural astaxanthin (6 mg orally) improved skin elasticity and wrinkles, while reducing transepidermal water loss and increasing skin moisture and sebum levels in healthy men.
A clinical study by Chalyk et al., 2017 found that astaxanthin (4 mg daily for 4 weeks) reduced plasma malondialdehyde, a marker of oxidative stress, while improving skin surface characteristics by reducing corneocyte desquamation and microbial presence (n=31, 4 weeks).
A clinical study from Tominaga et al., 2017 found that astaxanthin (6 or 12 mg daily for 16 weeks) improved wrinkle parameters. At 12 mg, it also helped maintain IL-1α levels in the stratum corneum. In parallel in-vitro testing, astaxanthin reduced UVB-induced inflammatory cytokine and MMP-1 secretion in a dose-dependent manner.
